Patricia Piccinini
Unbreaking Eggs – Radial
The above sculpture is created by Patricia Piccinini. The texture of it looks really realistic just like a real wheel. The rim and the tire used should be taken “off the shelf”. Although that funny shaped object looks so much like the same material as the tire (rubber or silicon), but it is actually made of fiberglass. The tire and the creature (or whatever) that lies on top blend together perfectly; I believe it is done by a thick layer of automotive paint. If look at it carefully, you can see the veins on the tire get smoother and less obvious as it get closed to the creature. This can be evidence that a similar colored paint have been used to cover up the joint between the tire and the creature, in order produce this illusion.
Sidney Nolan
CENTRAL AUSTRALIA
This painting is done by Sidney Nolan in 1950 using oil paints on canvas. I am not that advance on painting, but within my basic knowledge, she should have painted the sky first since the mountain range has darker color. Only two main colors are being used, but the painting is nowhere dull. I agree that Nolan is an expert on mixing the color as she could express every gradation in every corner of the mountain, which makes them looks so 3-dimensional instead of on a plane surface. The mountains really standout because it possesses 4/5 of the whole painting which gives audience a sense that Australia is massive. Also, the oil paint leaves an uneven and glossy surface, which matches the roughness of the mountains range.
