Project 3

I learn from my previous assignment about shifting of horizontal spaces and approach it into this design. The two users are art collector and gardener. The shifts are created by connecting different level with ramps and some stairs. The ramps provide easy access as well as gradually change in spaces for so the users are easy to adapt. There is also functional ramp (refer to photo “seats on ramp”).

I also introduce interlocking between spaces so while the building surface materials also give you some clue about it, (art collector: white concrete, gardener: wood). The openings focus on the west and north faces which stay away from adjacent buildings. The present of long window on the ceiling and vertical stripes are essential to provide other source of sunlight while maintaining privacy at the same time.

The building leans at its adjacent building on the south to provide a wider angle for sunlight to get in, with the overhead office by Victoria Street, they art as an enclosure of protection of the public space.

Drawings

Function of spaces are determined by this grip instead of build this grip before knowing the function, and the grip is positioned on the basis of sun direction. The dark grey hatches stand for the mix of properties of light grey areas.

Ramp: extent nature of land, mainly move between exterior and public
Spiral stair: located at the junction of spaces, used to move between private and public
They have common function for moving towards public at first floor and back to exterior on the top terrace.

Sun light gets into master room and living room (through the glass sliding door) in most of the time.

Transition between spaces

I separated the living room into two parts. The long block is suggested to be transition between terrace and the living room itself. Sliding glass doors allows accessibility to both people and sunlight.

This photo illustrates the lighting in the living room during day time.

Kitchen serve as a public facility which is reachable for the public as well as the bedrooms along the corridor which garther people up to bring interactive between users.

The hanging garden at the corner acts as a transition between the terrace and the sitting room, then the master room. This space holds the properties of terrace when it has shelter on top at the same time. People able to feel smooth change in environment while moving in and out.

The far end of the corridor is the bedroom which gives most privacy while maintaining a wide and freely visual sense due to the fact that its located in a corner with horizontal windows on two walls.

Project 2 - Villa Savoye

The ramps separate the building in the middle line, people able to experience contract between interior and terrace by gently bringing them up with gradual increase of sunlight through the windows.

This concept model shows openings and type of facade on each zone. It also allows me to view inside each rooms which helps to understand how different spaces connected to create circulation.

The Dinning Table & Elevators

- Dinning table (featuring Steve Jobs, responds to the simple design of Apple's products)
The table itself having a very simple structure, However, its whiteness, purity and wide separated legs able to emphasize the meaning of power, words representing this could be stable, grand, and exaggerate. The curvy shape of the table top make you feel like 'occupying the table' because you are bounded by the edges. Also, the lacework at the edge highlights the shape of the table top, which also make it looks more luxury.

- Chair (featuring Zhang Yin, echos to the use of wood and culture of China)
This chair is constructed by crisscrossed wooden strips. It is with long base towards the back which is very stable and not likely to be fell over. Cushions can be used to maximize the comfortness. Cushion is not used for the image is to show the frameworks. Words represent this could be stable, natural, graceful and emeritus.

- Elevator for Steve
Again, it emphasizes the simple design of Apple's products. It matches perfectly with the UFO shaped space for Jobs. Its circular shape also fit in the channel going down from his space.

- Elevator for Zhang Yin
It consists in combination of technology and natural into one nostalgic creature. It is anchored at the river side when not in use. It also acts as a very well-established decorator.

Final Submission

Overview

Steve Jobs' space

The concept comes from UFO being crashed into an old ruin. It is described as bringing technology to human. The extra bright lighting by the entrance shows overflow of power from the 'UFO'.

A closer look at the entrance of Steve's Space.

Other than traveling by elevator, you can choose to stroll along this staircase to the dinning space.

Interior of his space, and the elevator.

A view of the passageway for his elevator going down the ruin.

This is how it looks when looking upwards while traveling on the elevator along the passageway.

A river view while travel down to the bridge level.

Just before reaching the dinning space.

Zhang Yin's space

Her space is in the shape of olive. Instead of overusing transparent material, long bended strips are used to form this shape. It helps the air throw in the interior. The expansion in the middle shows power too.

The interior is separated into 3 levels.

The staircase and bridge approaches to her space.

The neighboring riverside and cascade add colors of natural to counteract the technology-based site.

Dinning Area

The large columns and tall roofing is built in a exaggerated large ratio to bring out the sense of power. There is large empty space and and extensive view. You feel like you are god while everything is under your feet.
